This was a 12 weeks design project in the fall of 2022 for my Interaction Design class at UMich. We were tasked to focus on a problem we care about for a neighborhood and get the experience of systematically developing a solution to that problem. We must follow the procedure to create several artifacts representing different stages of the design process: Competitive Analysis, Sketching Alternatives, Personas, Story Mapping, QOC, and prototypes. The project aims to help us learn the methods and skills involved in designing and prototyping interactive systems.
Research

Our problem statement is on the left.
My first task was to define my problem statement for a specific neighborhood.

Our competitive analysis is on the left.
My second task was to compile a list of problems or frustrating aspects of the current solutions to my problem. And includes four systems and articulates any deficiencies and strengths with respect to your proposed work.

The sketching Alternatives (1) overview is on the left.
We were tasked to divide a white 11" x 17" piece of paper into at least eight squares. Draw 8 distinct answers to my design problem, one in each square, and include a brief caption to help others understand each sketch's concept.

The sketching Alternatives (2) overview is on the left.
We were to divide a white 11" × 17" sheet of paper into 40 2" x 2" squares. I used our eight improved solutions now and drew five processes for each option to explain the design issue and the resolution.

I develop four personas. The task required three of these personas should be “pro” personas, and at least one of these personas should be an “anti” persona.

The one to the left is Story Mapping.
I used my primary personas to capture variations of the tasks in the flow and label groups of tasks as activities. My work should be at the granularity that you use 50 Post-It size items in the story map
The one to the left is the QOC method.
I described three different methods for this feature and considered the tradeoffs before deciding which one I wanted to use. Then I gave each a diagram and wireframe illustration of full application interaction.
Reflection
After building this project, I learned the design process from the initial formulation of a design problem to the creation of digital prototypes. Follow a systematic approach for designing interactive products, starting from a high-level design problem and ending with a detailed specification. Create excellent interaction designs by employing core design concepts and best practices. Engage in and respond to constructive critiques of design work as part of a community of designers. Communicate design concepts clearly and persuasively at multiple levels of refinement, from concept to sketch to prototype to specification. Develop an understanding of when not to design and how to account for diverse users to reduce the chances that designs will perpetuate existing inequalities worldwide.
